Compelling Question
Student Chatter: How can I engage students in political conversations through
the concepts taught in North Carolina's Civics & Economics?
Background Information
As a Civics & Economics teacher I wanted my students to do more than pass the North Carolina End of Course test. I wanted them to talk politics. I wanted them to analyze and evaluate government practices. Essentially, I wanted them to develop an active role in government beyond the obligatory civic duties. Beyond the pressures and constraints of the End of Course test, I wanted to hear students carry conversation about politics.
Why?
Often times students do not understand their civic responsibility simply because at their stage in life its irrelevant. However, if students are taught Civics & Economics in a relevant manner then they will understand their duty when they become older. More importantly, if students learn now how to engage in political conversation this can lead them into being politically active adults who still have these same converstation.
